The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper – RACE 1 Review

1              SALTY ROBYN N – On the comeback trail after an apparent minor injury. Qualifier was okay, but he’s catching a pretty salty group for this level. The rail will help. Barn will have to have him very ready to upset and win this.

2              ALWAYS THE SUN – Used pretty hard in that last one over at Pocono. That’s a strong group of claimers there, so this looks like a big drop. I do wonder if he’ll revert back to a more patient strategy tonight? He can, from this post.

3              FRANCO TRISTAN N – Down from the Spa and into an almost impossible spot. These are much, much tougher.

4              INCREDIBLE SHARK – No, I don’t know what happened last Saturday. The Shark just wasn’t himself. Since he’s right back in the entry box, I will assume he will be better tonight. He’s beaten far better than this in the past. Tough call.

5              ABERDEEN HANOVER – Another one of the possibilities in here. Doesn’t win all that often, but he can sure sneak onto the ticket somehow. The midpack post is perfect for the Vallee trainee. Only needs that right kind of trip. Follow #4?

6              INDEPENDENT ONE – I guess a lot of people “got the memo” on this one last week! $3.40! Really? He won like a 3-5 shot with that brush and crush, so they got the money. This is significant step up tonight. No 3-5 odds this evening.

7              CAPTAIN MULZAC – Came up just a hair shy to the classy Trump Nation out at the Meadows. Barn thought they were finding a soft spot in this condition, but in reality, it’s not. Will have to earn it, and it’s been while since raced big track.

8              UNLOADED N – In a race full of class droppers, it’s hard to like one on the hike, from a bad post. That means pass.

9              CENTURY CHURCHILL – I really thought he’d be super live last week. The tote board didn’t show it and he tired on the lead. So what do we do now? Moves from pole to post nine for fourth straight drop. Rare Big M trip Georgie Nap!!

10           JOE MCDUDE – We haven’t seen this one here before. Burke Brigade just went over 11,000 career wins, so big congrats on that! They had monster weekend out of town. How will Joe do from post 10? It’s been the bad post blues.

Race 2

1              MY ALPHA ROCK N – Barn’s entrants drew the rail in both halves of the daily double. They will probably both be medium longshots, though. They re-acquired this gelding from Ohio connections. He will get better very soon. Trainer: This guy has been a project and we believe he is close to being back where we want. Plan to lead and win.

2              BARIMAH A – 10YO warhorse is usually pretty dangerous on a drop like this. But, I have my doubts for tonight. Like race one, this is a pretty salty group for this level. Never really had a chance down at Philly. Vinny G gets the call.

3              THE WALL – Just one win this year, as opposed to 11 last season. Barn has bounced this guy around the smaller tracks where he’s probably at his best. Doe he still have the mile track stamina? He’s sure got the speed! Tough call.

4              VAGUE TRACES – Several horses in here own only one win this year. This is one of them. He’s also visited several tracks over last few months. Inconsistent is about best way I can describe current form. I really don’t know what to expect.

5              ITALIAN DELIGHT N – I really hope Cassar has gotten this guy back to top form. He looked to be a “real good” horse at one point. Yes, he got nipped with a gallant try last week. I expect a very top effort here tonight. One to fear.

6              BRANDON HANOVER – Exits same race as Always The Sun in first tonight. Maybe that will give us a gauge? This one came flying from the clouds, which rarely happens there. Just a professional racehorse. Does it from anywhere.

7              OUR CORELLI N – Barn moved him from Pocono to Yonkers for a try and that didn’t work out. Seems like a one move type, but this race could have a lot of action in it. That would aid his rallying cause.

8              GLENGARRY KNIGHT N – Recent form down at the Ocean is solid, but this is brand new ballgame here. I’ll pass.

9              DE LOS CIELOS DEO – Is he EVER going to win a race? I’m beginning to wonder. And the bettors are taking a beating! Yes, he came flying home to just miss last week, but everybody saw it. Will be overbet again. Moves to tough post.

10           AINTNOBETTOR A – Have to keep this fella on the longshot list, mostly due to post 10. It’s dangerous to ignore the connections, but in a race like this, you can’t like everybody.
