The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower RACE 1 ReviewFriday

1   SCIROCCO MISTYSAID – Couldn’t possibly have been more impressive in crushing these a few weeks ago. The rail gives Silva even more options. Will have to deal with #5 at some point, but I think he’s better! We’ll find out.

2   HOWMACSBLACKJACK – Moves back inside, which should be a great help. Was used pretty hard early last week and paid the price late. Was also coming back on short rest. So, full week this time. Will just sit and stalk. Hits ticket?

3   HOPETOBEFIRST – Seems to have tailed off lately over at Yonkers. But, this is a drop, back to the level of the claim. Took his mark on a big track years ago, so he can probably handle it. Still a medium longshot vs. these.

4   SOUTHWIND DARWIN – Seems like a long time since he won here. Also seems to have tailed off badly. Have to pass.

5   STEVE SAID – Gets a little better post tonight, and finally had a race from off the pace last week. It didn’t work, as he was far off the gate at the start. New driver tonight and we’ll definitely see the speed! Might put a scare into #1.

6   MAY I CRUISE WEST – Earned his second straight on-the-board appearance, so that’s a good thing! But, his run of good, inside posts has come to an end. So will the board streak.

7   GOOD DAY MATE – Have to feel bad for the barn when you get stuck with two straight 10-holes. This isn’t much better! Totally at mercy of pace and trip and Matt Z will just have to play it by ear. Needs to get a little luckier.

8   PROLOGUE – Left Yonkers on a sour note! So, why not try the big track? Connections have done well here, especially with it’s claims. Here’s another. I certainly don’t like the post, and expect the Judge to be extra careful with him.

9   FRANKANDJOANNE – For a long, long way, it looked like this guy was going to win a race! Then, reality set in and they got nailed at the wire. Not exactly “rewarded” with this post tonight. Will we see that same speed?

Race 2 Review

1   BIODETTI HANOVER – Hate to see that mistake in the comebacker, but eventually this guy will turn it around. He does have some talent, but these still look a little too tough for him. Vinny G gets the call, with Dex choosing #6.

2   ALL AMERICAN N – A little hard to gauge at the moment, with several different-looking lines on view. He was “good” again last week, chasing an uncatchable winner. This should be spot to take gloves off and charge! Can’t leave out.

3   FRESHETTE HANOVER – Also scooting over from Yonkers after a couple of breaks. Probably not a bad idea! Couldn’t trot with #2 the last time they squared off here. Will need a better trip than that. A maybe, at a price.

4   MAX VOLO – Max did pretty well when dropped a notch last week. Chased a well-rated winner. This could be a lot tougher here, but I would love to see that speed again. It will put him in position to chase and keep up. Trainer: He’s sharp right now! Up in class, but if he can get a trip, could be competitive.

5   OBERTO – Finally, and I repeat, finally gets a little love from the post gods. It HAS to help! So will the shorter field size. Owns one good charge, while timing and trip are critical. I wouldn’t talk you off in spot like this. Hope for price.

6   LION SAFARI AS – Another one that’s tough to get a read on. Dexter chose, curiously, over #1,7. Gets away from Final Claim, so that probably helps. Left the gate a little last time. Will have to do so again, OR he gets away last.

7   GRANDMA HEIDI – Looks like the favorite in here, after a few strong tries. She’s definitely settled down for her new barn. Yannick ends up here, instead of Max, so that tells us something. Will be firing out, trying to control it.

DRIVER CHOICES: Dexter Dunn 6 over 1,7
