The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper — Early Double Analysis — Friday, February 25, 2022

1              SVENGALI – Still very much a Team Silva “work in progress!” They haven’t figured this guy out yet. Pass again.

2              TAKEITTOTHEFACE – Keep in mind he won his last GSY race. No, it wasn’t here, but it still counts. Toss last in that race he didn’t belong in. We’re probably going to see some speed from his owner in this good post. A possibility!

3              CAUSWAY – All in all, outraced his odds in that one try here. Not bad. Hate to see that miscue down at The Hold, but maybe that’s why he shows back up here. I’m not on board yet, but will be watching for a bounce-back performance.

4              CASINO BAGS ANSO – Took a ton of betting action last time for some reason and ended up flat late, after being used early. I guess he was “live” that night? Hopefully, the price is a little more reasonable if you want to try again.

5              CAPTAIN’S REIGN – A fresh claim here, and a probable big step up in class. So far, those lower claimers have been a tad overmatched in these GSY races. This Captain will have to prove me wrong with a good trip and effort.

6              DOC SEMALU – Looks like he’s rounded into form nicely for a very potent trainer/driver combo in these races. Yes, the horse will have to prove it on the big track again, but maybe he’s ready for it? The problem is lack of value tonight.

7              THEREISAPACEFORUS – Just kind of went around there from the dreaded post 10. Don’t hold that against him, or her. This is a slightly better spot and a pretty wide-open race. IF there is some pace, he may be pacing strongly late.

8              BIG BAD BILL – This is not a terrible spot for Bill, with his speed. There isn’t a ton of confirmed speed in here, so don’t expect Bob J to just grab up. He will have to avoid getting used too hard, but that’s possible. Price may be right too!

9              FERDINAND A – He’s the other speed in here, so it will be an interesting gate snap for both 8,9. They should both be going forward. This gelding seems overdue for a touch more luck. Don’t be shocked if he races big in here tonight.

10           JERRYTONE – Found a nice “field of his friends” down at The Hold. Nice! Nobody got rich, since he went off at 6-5, but Austin steered him around there nicely. Joe Lee on now. Last post 10 try here was no good. Not sure what to expect.

Race 2

1              LET’SFLYTOGETHER N – Six in for the tag. Four in on Trackmaster ratings. Just another easy Friday night race to handicap. This fella hasn’t been able to find the right spot here at Club Med. I’m still waiting. Needs to find more.

2              DL’S BIG ELVIS – Raced well last week. Just ran into a revved-up Opus and it could happen again. Overall, this recent claim is working out well. Gets to race for $8K every week and he’s consistent. A welcome back to Braxten Boyd! Trainer: Finally draws inside. Hard-hitting claiming horse in this class. If he is close early, he will be part of it.

3              OPUS BLUE CHIP – Paid instant dividends on the Richie Johnson claim, and looked good doing it! So, they stuff him right back in same bunch and believe me, that’s the right thing to do! Will be very hard to go against off that effort.

4              OUTLAW BADLANDS – I’ll keep the Outlaw on the longshot list for a little while longer. Needs to show me more.

5              FERDIEONTHEBEACH – Didn’t make much of an impact in that first start off weak qualifier. I’ll pass again.

6              P L LEEROY – The Freehold bettors have been pounding Leeroy lately. They got paid once. Last couple tries here were nothing to write home about, so I am a bit skeptical if he can knock off Opus. Get fair price, if you think he can.

7              PIRATES ALLEY – We all know his game. Should be the sit-and-wait from this post. Will just have to hope for some sort of hot pace, or action up front. He can fly late, when the setup is right. I would use on the ticket for sure.

8              BAYONET – Showed a little more speed in that second start back, but then lacked much stamina. So, it’s probably going to take a few more starts until we see his best. Eventually it will come. Just have to be patient.

9              FRANKIE ROCKS A – Hey, he stayed pacing again last week! That’s three straight check-getting efforts! For Frankie, that’s huge! Let’s see if Dustin can keep the streak going from a real tough post.

10           CRUNCH – Did a nice job of picking up the pieces behind Opus last week. Nobody was catching him, but I liked the finish I saw. I still don’t like that record from last year, though. And obviously, I hate post 10! Good luck with that.
