The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper — Early Double Analysis — June 10, 2022

Race 1

1              ZLATAN – This does look like his kind of bunch and Jake Stillwell just needs to put him in play. It’s another absolutely wide-open race and the Big Z has won a few times here before. I would like to see some more speed, though.

2              KISS AN ANGEL – I guess she just did not handle that Philly surface. I will want to watch one here. Pass for now.

3              STORMY DANGLES – Looks like she had a nightmare trip over at Yonkers, so let’s just throw that out. Otherwise, the barn has been on a huge roll of late, in this series, and even a NYSS win this week. When you’re hot, you’re hot!

4              J A T O – Still on the comeback trail, in my opinion. Took all the betting action with the Judge down at Philly, but broke. That’s not good. Mr. Ahle takes the lines now and he’s been driving very well. This will be good test for them.

5              WARRIOR WAY – I see many slow last quarters, so that’s just not going to be good enough here. Another I will watch.

6              WINGS UP – Looks to me like he squandered a good trip last time. I do see that he took his mark on a big track, once upon a time. Maybe he will step up his game here? Mr. Krivelin is a very accomplished pilot. Possible longshot?

7              MY BIG KADILLAC – Just 1-18 so far this year and I just don’t think he’s fast enough to win on a mile track.

8              SHOEMAKER HANOVER – Gets tabbed as the morning line favorite for owner/trainer/driver John C. He’s got more than his share of wins in Club races and this guy has been ultra-consistent. Can’t argue with that. The one to beat.

9              LIFE WELL LIVED – Had he drawn a better post, I could probably make a much stronger case. But, he held his own in that tougher class by picking up a check. Just needs to get into the game for driver that’s making impression.

10           CAFÉ AMERICANO – Joe P gets no love from the post gods with this 5YO. He’s lightly-raced, but in good hands. The thing I do see if that scratch (refused) which worries me a great deal. Post 10 is no easy slot here. May just go around.

Race 2

1              MARVELOUS KISS – She seems to follow along nicely, so that could be a plus from this pole position draw. She has faced a little better in the past. If she gets that right kind of stalking trip, pilot could have her in high gear late.

2              BETABCOOL N – The “senior citizen” of this group of age 12. She’s actually facing a couple 3YO’s in here too! I think this is a drop for her, so we may see a bit more speed than you think. Not totally out of this one, at a price.

3              SALE EL SOL – Fresh face to Club Med. Harry L got 11 starts into her as a freshman, so that’s good experience. She won a couple of them too, so there is some talent here. I wasn’t overly enthralled with that qualifier. She might need one.

4              OOH REAL GOOD – Been just fair, bouncing up and down the class ladder at Philly. We don’t see this barn too much here at the Med, but maybe they’re just taking a shot? To see if she can handle a big track? Still have to rate a longshot.

5              SHE KNOWS IT ALL – Gets the very tepid call as morning line favorite. She’s a question mark, like many of these, so we all have to guess. It’s the connections here, and her back class. But, be careful, she doesn’t like to win too often.

6              ALKIPPE – Joe B certainly gave her every chance on the lead last time, and she held reasonably well. I’m not sure the lead is her game anymore, but this should be different. The helmet trip produces more results. Stalk and pop.

7              MISTATUDE – Far exceeded my expectations in her first few here. Her races look a lot better than several of these. But, it’s the old question of the outside post again. Came from far back last week. Will she have to do that again?
