The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

An interesting optional allowances of the NX2 variety has drawn a deep, interesting field in the sixth at the hybrid distance of 6-1/2 furlongs.

The tale of the tape told some interesting stories in replay. There is no shortage of speed in this 10-filly match but two of those appear to have the most talent in the group:

Parx shipper Blue Eyed Girl (2-1) and a fast local named My Star Potential (4-1) . However, if the surface is demanding, or a suicide speed duel ensues, there’s an interesting late runner named Money Fromheaven (20-1).

(Don’t get too excited putting the latter’s name together with the odds. It’s highly unlikely you will get anything approaching that with Trevor McCarthy riding her back. But she would be intriguing enough at half the price).

Blue Eyed Girl is from the high percentage Zulueta outfit. Since he claimed her on June 19, she’s compiled an excellent (5) 3-2-0 slate. She returns with good–and profitable–spacing and won her only start at this demanding sprint trip. Alex Cintron, who’s won for this ship-in barn, gets the call.

She is the deserving favorite, but there is some question as to whether she’s better than My Star Potential. A Maryland Lassie Stakes winner at two, she’s obviously had issues, making only five start over two years but she’s made them count, winning three-two here-and second by a nose in another for Claudio Gonzalez.

She’s never been beyond 6 furlongs and her last out win came at 5-1/2 furlongs. But she’s a bullet away from the barrier and returns with good spacing from that NOV 10 win. Most significantly, she has a favorable outside draw and gets considerable weight, 8 pounds, 123 to 115 with apprentice Victor Rosales.

Making her first start since April, Money Fromheaven lost a show photo [nose], making ground late at 7 furlongs timed in 1:22 after an opening gambit in a slow 23 4/5. The leaders ran 1-2 around the track. ‘Money’ showed restrained speed behind that pace before making a very game finish.

The recent return race, the cut-back, and the speed dynamic are all in her favor. Glad she had a recent speed sharpener for this. Check the Laurel Live Video Replay on our homepage and see if you agree that improvement is likely; RACE 8 on DEC 21.

At the moment, we’re considering a win wager on My Star Potential (3-1 is fair), a saver wager with Money Fromheaven (8-1 for absolute low) and three-horse boxes in vertical exotics. Straight wagers are, as always, price dependent.
