BEARS ON THE MOVE

By Marc Lawrence, PlaybookSports.com –– For a franchise that has called Chicago home since 1921, the Chicago Bears have turned their stadium search into a high-stakes game of three-card monte.

First, they purchased land in Arlington Heights. Then they shifted their focus back to downtown Chicago. Now, they’re making serious noise about crossing state lines and planting their flag in Hammond, Indiana.

The latest twist came June 5 when the Bears announced plans to advance development efforts in Hammond, roughly 30 miles south of Soldier Field. Team president Kevin Warren and chairman George McCaskey continue to push the Indiana option after Illinois lawmakers effectively placed the club’s stadium ambitions on the back burner.

Make no mistake: this is no longer about whether the Bears will leave Soldier Field. It’s about where they’ll land next.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson remains unconvinced, noting that Bears officials have floated multiple locations over the years and that no Indiana site has been finalized. Fair enough. But reading between the lines, the downtown Chicago option appears to be fading fast.

According to reports, the most likely destinations are now Hammond, Indiana, or Arlington Heights, Illinois. Staying at Soldier Field is increasingly viewed as a longshot.

For now, the NFL watches from the sidelines. Eventually, league owners will have the final say on stadium approval, financing, construction plans, and environmental reviews.

Until the first shovel hits the ground, this remains a negotiating battle. But one thing is becoming crystal clear: the Bears’ next home almost certainly won’t be the one they’ve known for the last century.
