THROUGH A TRAVERS-DAY RACING-TRIPS NOTEBOOK

HALLANDALE BEACH, August 31, 2026 – One of the more aesthetically successful Saratoga race meets is concluding with one of the more memorable sessions in our lifetime. Travers Day turned out to be the icing on this confection, beginning with the lid lifter on a compelling 14-race program.

FIRST RACE: The day began with the fast-working Club Reign, winning his career debut as much the best and a possible future star. Owned in part by Super Bowl winning quarterback Rusell Wilson, he stalked and crushed, looking like a winner virtually every step of the way. Trainer Whit Beckman is enjoying his most productive Spa stand ever …

THIRD: In winning her belated three-year-old debut, Gracie impressed as a potential New York-bred stakes winner. She has the right style and should appreciate more ground–thank you very much …

FOURTH: Jose, Manny, and Flavien deserve all their props given their productivity throughout the meet but Ricardo Satana Jr’s handling has made the difference in many of his 33 victories, placing him fourth in the standings. The race riding has been as impressive as many of the quine performances at this meet …

G1 H ALLEN JERKENS: When measured against the clock and the visual impressions of this country’s fastest three-year-old, Englishman, he is worthy of comparison to great sprinters of the past.

The mind’s eye conjures up the kind that takes the lead immediately and run the competition of their feet: Groovy and the great filly Affectionately were of that type, beating the clock and the competition fight rom jump street.

While a bullet from the gate, Englishman is not runoff speed—his opening quarter mile in 23 underscores that point. His tactical speed and devastating midrace move may enable him to be recognized as the best if all time. Assuming a Breeders’ Cup victory and continued good health, his 4-year-old campaign would be 3agerly awaited …

G1 PERSONAL ENSIGN: Fully Subscribed finish like a filly capable of running down division-leading Nitrogen, assuming freshness, something stablemate Sea Strike lacked in his Travers chase two hours later. If her effort wasn’t the afternoon’s best performance, it came awfully close …

G2 LAKE GEORGE: Sloe pace, no problem.  Coming from last into the stretch? Same. Handling 9 furlongs in the QE 11 at Keeneland next time? Not if Naomis runs back to Saturday’s mile. Even given a dynamic that produces big turn-of-late-foot victories, you don’t see what the new Chad Brown acquisition did every day …

G1 FOREGO: Santana-handling was the difference, timing the finish just right with Hymn, a tough beat for Senior Officer fans. Problem is the country’s best sprinter is a three-year-old …

G1 BALLERINA:  Even with her prolific Spa record, it was unexpected to see Ways and Means dominate this group the way she did. On huge stakes program whereby Chad Brown often has risen to the occasion, his work with this older sprint mare might have been his best work on the day. Remarkable performance.

G1 TRAVERS: Listed in post order:

EMERGING MARKET—performed in a way suggesting that a freshening is in order.

LEADING CHARGE—it’s 48 hours later and still can’ believe he won this in his third lifetime start. Proved he had the talent to belong, perfect handling from Franco, engineering a perfect winning trip. He loved the trip as Brad Cox promised he would. Superb horsemanship.

NAPOLEON SOLO—ran a winning race but settled for place. Pace prompter and rail run didn’t help but also didn’t stay the complete trip: 10 furlongs minus 50 yards!

THE PUMA—could have had better racing luck, likely costing him a show finish. Interested to see his third start off the layup.

RENEGADE—completely compromised at the break but still did no running when it mattered.

OCELLI—could become a millionaire despite never having won a race.

SEA STRIKE—even if he hadn’t tracked the speed, he regressed significantly.

BABY VINO—no wet, no home track edge, no similar effort.

GOLDEN TEMPO—12-week layup too much to overcome with these, finished up late better than many observers think, Jose made no mistakes given race dynamics, will continue developing.

SILENT TACTIC—outposted and outrun, much  better than his Saturday effort indicates.

Observations welcomed …

  1. Englishman was in a league of his own. Dazzling performance.
I caught him on Belmont Stakes Day at 4/1 when he bested Crude Velocity.
Won’t get that price again on this exceptional horse.
Chad Brown showed off his skills in a dominating fashion with his charges-not surprising.
Was a nice moment in the days opener seeing the joy with Russel Wilson’s first start and first victory as an owner. Maybe catch the attention of other professional athletes as to the thrill and competition from horse race ownership/participation.
14 races on the day is a marathon to get through ha ha.
All in all great day of star quality performances and the weather was marvelous; what more can we ask for.
I am looking forward to my annual week at Keeneland Racecourse. A close second to Saratoga.

  2. Santana used to be,for a while,Rasmussen main rider and then ,who knows what happened, went into different directions.Hard to lose a trainer with so many good horses in so many tracks.Everytime I see Bridgemoan’ s name on a horse, which by the way,s always a long shot,I think of when before Santana He was Asmussen main rider. Now I almost feel bad that he has other jockeys ‘ leftovers to ride on. Never know what goes on after a race is lost… Did Asmussen’ s sons stopped improving on their horse riding?

  3. There were rumors of issues between jockey and trainer when Santana was no longer first call. Happens often — tough game, JG!

If Santana keeps riding the way he has at this meet, new outfits will more than compensate for the loss …
