It did get the pulse racing looking at the past performances but at the end of the Clement L. Hirsch, Ollie’s Candy, and now the formerly undefeated Secret Spice, put on one hell of a show, the former winning by a head.
Kent Desormeaux, actually riding a horse out to the finish line, put her in the game early on. She raced Queen Bee to You into defeat while Secret Spice and Flavien Prat sat back with a perfect-trip view of the early battle.
On the final turn, Ollie’s Candy separated herself by three lengths just as Secret Spice was getting into gear and ready to challenge, and that she did. By the time the fillies entered the stretch, Secret Spice was in full flight, cutting into the leader’s margin with every stride.
Her momentum carried her to a narrow advantage but Ollie’s Candy had enough reserves and was resurgent in those final desperate strides.
Ollie’s Candy prevailed by the hob of her head, hitting the finish post in 1:44.66. La Force was an anti-climatic third. Super Spice had every chance but didn’t get it done.
Both riders were happy with their fillies post race as was trainer John Sadler, who was notching his fifth victory in this Grade 1 event.
