BetMGM Was Provided a License from LGCB
A sports betting license for BetMGM was issued by the Louisiana Gaming Control Board on July 21, 2022, under a condition. BetMGM is required to provide updates on the federal investigation into billionaire investor Barry Diller. Since January, the BetMGM Louisiana Sportsbook has been running under a temporary license that expired on July 30, 2022. A five-year renewal has been granted.
According to state officials, the Louisiana State Police identified Diller’s participation as the chairman and senior executive of IAC, which owns 7% of BetMGM, during its inquiry into BetMGM’s permit application. The Baton Rouge Capitol served as the location of the Control Board meeting.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Department of Justice are looking into Diller and his son-in-law, Alexander von Furstenberg, in relation to a $60 million profit on the purchase of Activision Blizzard Inc. According to press sources, the purchase was made a few days before Microsoft Corp. decided to buy the video game developer. Diller has rejected any wrongdoing.
Conditions Regarding BetMGM’s License
The Louisiana sports betting permit, commonly known as a license, that the Gaming Control Board unanimously approved for Nevada-based BetMGM comes with a number of requirements relating to Diller. These include a written report on the progress of the federal inquiry every six months, starting on September 1, 2022.
BetMGM is required to provide updates to the Control Board, the Louisiana State Police, and the state attorney general.
Chairman Ronnie Johns stated to Gambling.com during the Control Board meeting on July 21, 2022, that the state had no issues with BetMGM, which is running under a license via Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino.
Boyd Gaming, a company located in Nevada, is the owner of Sam’s Town, a riverboat casino in Shreveport. Gamblers across the entire state have access to the BetMGM mobile app.
However, BetMGM is unable to provide its services in the nine parishes that voted against sports betting in a statewide referendum in November 2020, much like other mobile applications in Louisiana.
Ongoing Investigation
The head of the Control Board pointed out that Diller has not been accused of any crimes. Johns stated that they do not desire to punish BetMGM only as a result of an investigation.
Diller would have to give up his stake in BetMGM if it is determined that his actions were inappropriate, according to Johns. Otherwise, BetMGM would have to renounce its Louisiana operating license.
