By Marc Lawrence — From this week’s Playbook Football Newsletter: Looking through the periscope of perception, the Navy Midshipmen appear to be headed straight down to Davy Jones’ Locker. Since going 11-2 in 2019, the Middies are on a steep 4-11 SU dive. Meanwhile 3-3 Memphis is currently on a 0-3 SUATS skid after going 38-14 SU in the previous four seasons, and starting 3-0 in 2021. With mighty Cincinnati up next for Coach Ken Niumatalolo and his sailors, tonight’s game is an absolute must-win if the 1-4 Swabbies want to avoid parking the ship in dry dock during the holidays for a second straight year. For what it’s worth, Navy has sailed away with the cash in five of the last six series meetings with Memphis, while the Tigers show up with a recent 0-6 ATS failure as conference chalk of 7 or more points. Niumatalolo can also play the revenge card tonight after his Swabbies dropped a 10-7 decision at home to the Tigers last season in a game in which they outgained Memphis, holding them to a season-low 280 yards. The bottom line is we can’t trust these cats with their 457-yard, 118th-ranked defense now that Navy is off the No-Doze. You have permission to come aboard tonight. |
