KENTUCKY DOWNS OPENS

Kentucky Downs, the old Dueling Grounds in the Kentucky countryside, opens it’s meeting on Saturday. The track is popular because of its attractive parimutuel takeout rates.

All-turf-all-the-time, did we happen to mention that the lid-lifting 10-race program attracted 145 overnight entrants?

The feature is the $750,000 Tourist Mile Stakes for 3-year-olds at up. In addition, two stakes for juveniles, one for each sex, are also run at eight furlongs with a purse of $500,000 each.

There are two Pick 4s and one Pick 5. The takeout rate in each is 14%.

The Mike Maker-trained Hembree with Tyler Gaffalione is the 4-1 early line favorite in the Tourist Mile. Mark Casse’s Fly So Pretty is the 7-2 choice in the Juvenile Fillies, also with Gaffalione,

After anticipated scratches of the two early favorites in the colt’s division, co-favoritism at the moment is between Dale Romans’ trainee Night Time and Casse’s Peace Achieved.
