By Marc Lawrence – Tampa Bay traded picks Nos. 14 and 117 to the 49ers in exchange for picks Nos. 13 and 245 to make sure Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs will be blocking for Tom Brady in 2020. He’s coming off a career year with the Hawkeyes. His technique will need to improve at the next level, but his freakish athleticism and power combine for a high, high ceiling in the NFL — a slam dunk pick for the Buccaneers. And don’t be surprised is he eventually finds a home at the guard position … Antoine Winfield Jr., a former Minnesota safety with NFL bloodlines, was a strong selection for Tampa Bay at No. 45. He is an super-instinctive player who also checked some boxes at the Combine with his 4.45-second 40-yard dash … The rich got richer on Day 3. Getting WR Tyler Johnson — the 48th-ranked player on the Pro Football Focus Big Board — at pick 161 to play on an offense that already features Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Rob Gronkowski and O.J. Howard is borderline unfair. Johnson generates separation at one of the highest rates in the class, and owns one of the highest contested-catch rates in the class as well. That’s why he was Tampa’s steal of the draft … For more on the Bucs’ draft and a composite review of their grade from 4 of the nation’s leading football authorities, click here.
The recent passing of legendary Auburn head coach Pat Dye brought back memories from years past. Dye, who tested positive for COVID-19 but was asymptomatic during a hospital stay, passed away from ongoing kidney issues. He led the Tigers to a 99-39-4 record in 12 seasons – including nine winning seasons in a row. He won four SEC titles and was names SEC Coach of the Year three times while coach Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson. Auburn went 29-25-1 during the five seasons before his arrival, not making a bowl game once. My well-oiled machine says he was at his best in home games with the Tigers, going 63-13-2 SU and 40-26-1 ATS … including 29-0 SU and 22-7 ATS as a favorite of 13 or more points – which puts him into our ATS Hall of Fame as well. There is a reason Auburn’s home field is named after him. RIP Pat.
