The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Marc Lawrence, — I was hoping to share this with you today with Phillies ace Ranger Suarez taking the mound against San Francisco this evening. Unfortunately, Suarez was on the hill in Colorado yesterday, where he dropped a rare 5-2 decision. It was rare given the fact that Suarez opened the season 9-0 with a 1.36 ERA. His season-opening run rivaled Hall of Famers Grover Alexander and Juan Marichal among the best starts in baseball history.

Suarez trailed Alexander, who had a 1.24 ERA in his first 10 starts in 1916 and a 1.31 ERA in 1915. Suarez was also the first pitcher to start 9-0 with a sub-1.50 ERA through 10 starts since Marichal did it for the Giants in 1966. He was also the first Phillies hurler since Robin Roberts in 1952 to win at least nine consecutive starts. And then, in the blink of an eye, it ended.

It also ended a streak of 15 straight winning or tied series for the major league-best Phillies (38-16), Philadelphia’s longest streak since 1983-84
