The Kentucky Board of Stewards have ordered that Lord Miles, longshot winner of the Wood Memorial trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., be scratched from the Kentucky Derby, making room for Also-Eligible #22, Santa Anita Derby runnerup Mandarin Hero, to enter the starting gate.
Mandarin Hero is the second Japanese entrant in Derby 149, and second entrant to draw into the race from the Derby alternates list. He joins UAE Derby hero Derma Sotogake.
Earlier, Cyclone Mischief drew in following the declaration of Practical Move due to an elevated fever.
All horses entered this weekend were ordered scratched. Two of Joseph’s horses were euthanized this week after competing in races at Churchill Downs.
Parents Pride and Chasing Artie were owned by prominent horseman Ken Ramsey. The causes of death were categorized as “”sudden-death events.”
Joseph’s horses are barred indefinitely pending an investigation and he cannot enter horses in races at all Churchill Downs-owned properties.
