The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Marc Lawrence — From this week’s Playbook Basketball Newsletter: With 4 starters back from a 22-12 team, Saint Mary’s had hopes of challenging Gonzaga for this year’s Big West crown. It’s not going to happen. The Gaels return home after having their vocal chords ripped out in their previous game, a 90-60 obliteration by the Zags a week ago, their 3rd worst home defeat in the last 30 years. Mary’s recent 1-2 SU run also knocked the Gaels into a 3rd-place tie with surprising Pacific at 7-4 in WCC play. Our friendly database confesses that Saint Mary’s is 10-0 SU and 7-3 ATS in rebound games following a loss of 20-plus points, plus they’re also 6-1 ATS at home off a home loss, while the Tigers are just 1-13 SU in this series. Redemption looms for the Gaels tonight.

A blocked punt for a touchdown. A live F-bomb. Big hits, devastating sacks. Some fantastic throws. Some wounded ducks. Razzle-dazzle plays. Live in-game sideline interviews immediately after good and bad plays. Live audio of coaches calling plays. A camera and audio inside the replay booth (nice). And most important no maddening debate over what the hell a catch is. Heck, even the ABC broadcast included the over-under on its game in progress scoreboard, and each quarter included a graphic of the Caesars Sportsbook lines of all of the weekend’s games.
