The day’s highlighted stakes, the Diamond Jubilee Sprint at 6 furlongs over ground that’s a cinch to be a bit boggy.

Thanks to the good folks of Sky Sports, we learned that more than an inch and half of significantly pelting wetness had doused all Friday. Indeed, it was an Ascot record rainfall.

On paper the Diamond Jubilee widely agreed to primarily be a match between 2-Dream of Dreams (5-2), coming off a winning prep for Sir Michael Stoute with Ryan Moore, re-riding and dropping nine pounds off that win over only two rivals but on sort ground.

The main competition is Starman (5-2). Drawn midfield for Charlie Hills, he gets the leading-rider services of 19-year-old Oisin Murphy, who finished first in five races Friday but was allowed to keep only four trophies ruled the stewards. (More on that Sunday).

Starman is 3-for-4 lifetime including a Group 2 in his 2021 debut on May 12. The lone career defeat came on soft ground in last year’s Gr1 Champions Sprint. Murphy rides back and drops five pounds.

Given the soft ground, prefer Dream of Dreams to win. (Late Saturday morning Starman was scratched due to the heavy ground)
