The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

Race 1 Review by Dave Brower – Saturday, June 13, 2020

1   ENDURING HOPE – Filly gained some valuable stakes experience last year at two, but it looks like she wasn’t quite ready for that. Sports a pair of interesting-looking qualifiers, but meets a pretty strong field here. Tackles older.

2   HURRIKANE NORAKANE – Looks like she was just getting good when the shut-down came. That’s the story for many of these horses. Comeback qualifier was okay, but not great. She would need a big one to beat these. Not sure.

3   ANTHEM – Banged out a dozen starts as a freshman and that’s a lot. Back now at three and that’s the typical Nifty type of qualifier. A decent finish from the back. I can’t guarantee she’s primed and ready tonight, but will be soon.

4   COCONUT BEACH – So far, all the Erv Miller trained horses have looked ready! This lass has four qualifiers into her and they were all good. I still have a feeling she will offer a decent price in here. Probably worth using at correct value.

5   SO NICE HANOVER – Had a couple of nice wins last year to get her going. Tried the one stakes race and that was too much. Back now at three with two good-looking preps. Barn is about to catch fire and we can start right here.

6   FIREFLY – Very good-looking filly last year! Danced the Grand Circuit and more than held her own. Turned in super qualifier vs. Stephanie Deo, who romped here last week. Hopefully, she’s cranked and ready with just the one prep.

7   SHE’S NUN BETTOR N – The barn qualified a bunch of newcomers over past few weeks and this was one of the more impressive ones. She split horses late and just burst by them handily. Can’t look any better than that. Plus, she’s a 4YO.

8   WAYSIDE – Ended her freshman campaign on a winning note. Always nice to put them away with that confidence builder. But, her qualifier doesn’t look nearly as good as a few others in here. Just might need one more.

9   ANNE BONNEY N – It’s hard to fault her in this very tough-to-handicap race. Had the one good start before the shut-down. Shows a very good-looking qualifier at the farm. She’s a 5YO! Only knocks: post, and JB chose #5. Tough call.

10 MOVIE TOWN – Draws same post as her qualifier and will probably race the same way. Not just yet.

Race 2 Review

1   MODERN ROCK – Crawled home in his qualifier, so he clearly doesn’t look primed and ready yet. Pass.

2   SURFER BEACH – Oh what a great pedigree this guy has, but note he’s already been gelded. Did not race last year at two, so that’s a negative. Looks like he got some good education down in Florida, but he wasn’t ready here. I’ll wait.

3   LEVEL UP – That was a disappointing way to end his season last fall, losing at 1-9. Faced a pretty good older horse in the Goshen qualifier, so that wasn’t bad. On Lasix now. Things looking up for this sophomore, eventually.

4   DULY NOTED – Looking at those Gaitway qualifiers, I don’t think he’s quite up to the task yet. Needs a lot more.

5   THE GREEK FREAK – That’s an outstanding looking line from the farm. Flashed really nice speed in the series her last fall. This is a decent horse and I’m anxious to see what he can do this year. It starts right here. Same speed coming.

6   SUNUMA BEACH – If you’re not a believer of the speed of the Freak, you could opt here. Tetrick’s choice. Hall of Fame barn. Solid move in the qualifier at Magical Acres. Homebred with a nice pedigree. Linda will have this one ready!

7   BARRAGE HANOVER – I wish I’d seen that qualifier, because this colt could be any kind. Barn had a killer in last night, assuming Party Girl Hill won. Brother to Med Pace champ He’s Watching. And two others that paced in 50. Talented?

8   REVOLT – Went on Lasix this year and did have a start, albeit not a very good one. Drew outside the main contenders here, so this looks like a watch-and-wait situation. A longshot.

9   ALEX HAVING FUN – Just doesn’t look sharp at all, so he’s an easy pass from this very tough post.

10 DERBY DOG HANOVER – Was carefully raced from behind in the Goshen qualifier. That’s a pretty tough trip he endured. And, guess what? Here comes another. I would be very surprised if he found a way to reach from out here.
