The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

Today’s feature is the Smart N Fancy Stakes. This is what we submitted last night to WNYT, Ch, 13 in Albany, as we do prior to every Saratoga race day, for last night’s 11 o’clock sports report:

  1. Graded stakes placed Down Under
  2. Goes first-time Lasix, adds blinkers
  3. Strong blowout at Keeneland base

What we didn’t include was a wagering menu. Betting to win and place at 5-1 or greater.

  1. Just looked at the race, and guess what I agree with your selection of Victory Kingdom; but, I am aghast that you, a seasoned ‘capper,
are making a place bet. I simply don’t get it when horseplayers bet place and show, and make exacta key/box wagers where only one ticket can win. Those that do can’t complain about takeout as they are making their bets far more expensive; why all the combinations? What’s the hurry? One bet at a time will carry the bankroll a long time, unless , of course, you are on vacation and get to attend the races only a few days a year – then it’s ‘send it in’ and pray.

  2. First, it’s academic, race rescheduled to main track, I did not make the play I was considering.

Why place? Horse was 8-1 on the early line in competitive sprint and I considered too many horses for an exacta play. I thought half the 8-1 would be fair so I thought place would make me money, based on 8-horse turf race.

But can’t please you, Wendell. I box exactas you say I’m playing against myself. I play two-way straight looking for perhaps a $5 place mutuel and what’s ” capper” like me doing?

I’m looking to win, if not, preserve my bankroll.
