The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

Race favorite Blue Prize (4-5) looks like a layover in Sunday’s Summer Colony Stakes and we won’t try to beat her. Let me count the ways:

First, she exits a key race, the prestigious Delaware Handicap. There have been two subsequent starts; two subsequent winners.

Second, she’s turning back from that 1-1/4 miles behind repeat winner, the class Elate, in which she was still trying at the finish. Her record at today’s trip: (10) 4-4-1.

And today, rather than fight a Jose Ortiz ridden rival, he reunites with the younger Ortiz, who has two wins and a second in her last three rides on the classy, Correas-trained mare.

We’re on record with her to win but she likely will be unplayable at ante post odds. Instead, we’ll key her in exactas over uncoupled Navarro Breaking Bread (12-1),and rapid worker Vexatious (6-1), going turf to dirt.

YESTERDAY: Point of Honor was pretty uncomfortable between horses much of the 10-furlong trip but showed class to win a place photo. Meanwhile, Dunbar Road, much the best on Saturday, looks to be the better of the two Alabama favorites. She’s a special filly.

  1. Good day at the shore yesterday. Paco delivered late for me. Staying there today.

Tough to go against Blue Prize. Other races on card offer better value.

Yesterday at the Spa: Both favorites one and two as expected in feature. As to the other ten races on the card, only three favorites won while seven didn’t; of the seven, three failed to hit the board (what’s that ole saw, Alice? ‘Graveyard of ……).
