Just because we are taking a horse from post 10 going 7-1/2 furlongs on the Gulfstream green doesn’t mean we have a parimutuel death wish. Because there are things to like.
Both of Chao’s lifetime wins came on turf, they came at today’s trip, and in fact might have had his third win in 16 starts–with four placings–had it not been for a tough trip. See for yourself:
Check out Gulfstream Park on MAY 13, Race 1, forced to steady twice while going longer against arguably a tougher set of rivals.
Further, this is Bobby DiBona at his best, as he’s 26% effective with his turn-backs, and is a worthy 27% with runners making their third start off a layup, and Edgar Perez is taking a return call.
As to the wide draw, his tactical speed should provide Perez with options. And, finally, his most recent figure is not only competitive better is better than most of these. The price should be fair.
We’re taking Chao to win at 4-1 or greater and quinellas with recent claim Merzaz (2-1) and class dropper Wicked Finn (7-2).
