The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

Friday’s fifth race on turf going a mile for older grass specialists is interesting given the presence of Ramsey Solution (2-1).

Is Ken Ramsey tired of paying the bills on the gelded 8-year-old who has been away for 491 days but has won off long layoffs in the past.

Is the purse and potential 35,000 claim and winning wager make sense given the realities or is naming Irad Ortiz Jr. an invitation to come and get him, he’s all yours.

Of course he can win, he said defensively.

Instead, we’ll wager on Eyes On Target (9-2), a recent course winner and claimed for the third straight time, this time with Kelly Breen reaching in, jailing him for a month, and entered back with stable rider Paco Lopez, a hot tandem recently and 25% for their careers.

Further, Breen is 19% off the claim and haltered a runner who should have won his last if not for gate troubles and a slow pace instead of a game-finish neck loss. ‘Eyes’ has done his best running at Gulf.

Taking Eyes On Target to win at 9-2 or greater and key-boxing exactas with Ramsey Solution and Chanceux (4-1) dropping into his claiming debut for Pletcher, 31% efficient in that role.
