The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

The featured race to begin the Gulfstream Park weekend in Friday’s 8th race, an optional NX1 going one mile and 70 yards on Tapeta track.

The Gulfstream AW surface opens many possibilities, per usual, but videophiles will be concentrating on the run made by Honesto (5-2) at GULFSTREAM PARK, SEP 23, Race 7, or even AUG 27, Race 10 if you prefer.

Honesto had excuses in both.

But is most recent was a significantly better effort, significant because it came with a class drop to this level. His race was extremely solid, especially since he appeared ill-prepared at the start.

Handicapper 101 will say he’s a poor risk based on his lifetime mark of (18) 1-3-5, obviously more money finishes than wins.

But upon further review, note that the win and three placings came on All-Weather tracks, the now familiar Horses for Surfaces angle.

An added plus is that through last weekend’s races, jockey Miguel Vasquez has compiled an amazing 10-5-1 slate in his last 25 rides. There may be no hotter rider in America.

We’re taking Honesto to win, 5-2 or greater, and quinellas with Uncle Armando (3-1) and Tinker Tailer (6-1), extra ticket with ‘Uncle’.*
