The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Marc Lawrence, — On Saturday, three head coaches were terminated, which came as a surprise. Andy Avalos from Boise State and first-year mentor Zach Arnett at Mississippi State were cut loose, but the headline maker was Jimbo Fisher, who was kicked out of Texas A&M and landed on a $76M cushion. Fisher had a 45-25 record with the Aggies, but the real person at fault in College Station is the regent who hired him. He should be fired on the spot for his fiscal irresponsibility. Many are campaigning for Deion Sanders as Fisher’s successor, including Stephen A. Smith, and there are also talks of Lance Leipold, Lane Kiffin, and even Dabo Swinney rumored to be in the talks. However, Mike Elko, the second-year head coach at Duke, shouldn’t be overlooked. Elko was the Aggies’ defensive coordinator under Fisher from 2018 to 2021. With him, the team had a 34-14 record, including the 9-1 2020 season that resulted in an Orange Bowl victory and a top 5 final ranking. Elko went 9-4 last season in his first year at Duke, with a victory in the Military Bowl, and the Blue Devils are 6-4 this season. He checks all the boxes.
