In the featured ninth race at Gulfstream Park, a turf dash going five-eighths, appears on paper to be a battle between Larry Rivelli and Larry Rivelli.
And it’s not just what could be the “other Rivelli'” since he saddles the early line favorites Smokin’ Richie (3-1), who will have a rider other than Irad Ortiz Jr., off his mounts until Wednesday because of a gap mishap, and second favorite Chinobe (7-2).
They both have high early speed, and there are a few insider of both of them, Freewheeler and Dr. Duke who could supply a lot of pressure on their best day, but the difference is how all are coming up to today’s spot.
Chinobe made a wide turn-move to open a lengthy, premature lead in his Hawthone 5-1/2 furlong dirt finale and will appreciate the turnback in trip, battling targets to his inside and back to his preferred surface.
It will depend on Junior Alvarado to time his turn move just right and possibly blow it open into headstretch. His figures are forward and Rivelli is, after all, 35% effective second off the layup.
We liked his Illinois finale and he might have found a softer set here. See if you think he was unlucky to lose his last: Hawthorne, DEC 11, Race 7. Remember, too, Rivelli is profitable lifetime going dirt to turf.
Taking Chinobe to win at 3-1 or greater and an exacta box with his mate. Exotics players might consider Unprecedented (4-1) for second and third.
