Marc Lawrence — The deadline for NFL players to opt-out of the 2020 season due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic is rapidly approaching. Under the agreement made between the NFL and NFLPA, all players must make the decision whether or not to opt-out of the 2020 NFL season by tomorrow. Players considered high risk for COVID-19 that choose to opt-out of the 2020 NFL season can earn $350K and an accrued NFL season. Players without risk can earn $150K if they choose to opt-out. According to Pro Football Focus, the Patriots cleared roughly $17 million in 2020 cap space as a result of opt-outs last Tuesday, by far the most of any team in the NFL. They came into the day with the 25th-most 2020 cap space, per Over The Cap, and are now in the top 10. As of today less than half of the teams have yet to report a defector. Speaking of opting out, ESPN reports that a group of Pac-12 football players from multiple schools is threatening to opt out of both preseason camps and games until its negotiations with the league regarding concerns about racial injustice, their safety during the coronavirus pandemic and other demands are completed. A text message said the group’s goal is to “obtain a written contract with the Pac-12 that legally ensures we are offered the following protections and benefits.” Red Grange is turning over in his grave as you read this.
Grinding Out The Profits
From the PLAYBOOK ADVANTAGE for August: Playbook’s Victor King laid out his top 5 NFL Player Props in this month’s ADVANTAGE and at the top of his list was Detroit Lions QB Matt Stafford OVER 4150.5 Passing Yards. He notes that Stafford is healthy again and has the ‘Big Four’ intangibles”, namely PRODUCTION… TALENT… EXPERIENCE… and LONGEVITY. Prior to his injury last year, Stafford made 136 starts in 136 games. King goes on to point out that OC Darrell Bevell has taken the ‘governor’ off the Lions gas regulator and has put the pedal to the metal. Remember you read it here.
