It appears that trainer Tony Granitz is pulling out all stops to finally reach the winners’ circle with Barrel of Destiny (7-2) in today’s sixth race for fillies and mares going one mile on the turf.
The NY-bred mare was entered but scratched out of an optional claimer on April 3, an N2X with a $32,000 tag. Her last here on March 11 was at that same level, where she finished fourth (more on that later).
Today’s spot is a ‘date race’–no win at a mile since March–and the claiming price has been halved. The switch to Antonio Gallardo tells you all you need to know about intent. But wait, there’s more.
While in NY she was under the care of two pretty good horsemen, John Hertler and George Weaver but now she’s back here with Granitz, who won with this mate here last year. Her (5) 1-1-1 shows some affinity for the ground here.
Her last race was a puzzler. It was quickly run, she made no impression but finished willingly late but wasn’t beat up by the rider when victory was out of reach in deep stretch. But it should be a good race to build on; see for yourself.
Check out the Tampa Bay Video Replay on the homepage, RACE 5 on MAR 11. In addition to the drop and Gallardo, there appears to be enough early gas to set up her late run style. It will take perfect timing and strength to get the job done.
We’re taking Barrel of Destiny to win at 5-2 or greater anbd key-boxing exactas with recently improved and well spotted Better Yet (6-1) and another class dropper, Monkey Mind (3-1)
