The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

COTILLION DRAW QUOTES

Edited Press ReleaseBill Mott, trainer of Obligatory (No. 1,   (ML: 10-1): “The big thing for her is that it is a two-turn test. We had only one two-turn race when she was quite inexperienced. She was not effective that day because of her inexperience. We’re hoping she got more races under her belt. We know she’s quite effective at seven-eighths and a flat mile at one turn. It’s an experiment for us. I know it’s a big race and she’s doing well. I think she competes with those horses at a flat mile or a one-turn race. We have to see how she gets along at two turns. It’s a bit of a fact-finding mission for us to figure out the configuration of the race is going to suit her. We’ll see. We know she can get a mile and seven-eighths.

Rob Atras, trainer of Maracuja (No. 4, 8- 1): “I was hoping for a middle-type post. I know the turn comes up rather quickly. I was hoping for something between the four and six posts. I thought that would be good for her. I would her to hopefully break sharp and that would give Kendrick some options to where he wants to sit. Hopefully, she will be in a good position.”

Coming into the Cotillion: “There are some talented fillies in the race. It’s kind of wide open. It gives us a shot. I still think it’s a deep field and we’re going to have to work on a trip to do it. I do like the way she is coming into the race. I just hope she runs her “A” race.”

Bob Baffert, trainer of Private Mission (No.  7, 9-2): “We will figure out a plan on game day. I think seven is ok. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn’t.”

John Servis, trainer of Leader of the Band (No.  9, 12-1: “It really doesn’t matter to us (regarding post position) she’ll come off the pace.  It’s a tough race, but she is doing really well, and we figured we would give her a last shot before turning her out for the year.”
