By Marc Lawrence — From this week’s PLAYBOOK Football Newsletter Issue #13: The bad news for Duke’s fans is that the 3-7 football team still has two more games to play before slinking away into the shadows with a third straight losing season. So, will Duke give head football coach David Cutcliffe a farewell tour of his own in 2022 like hoops coach Mike Krzyzewski?
Or will they bid him adieu after fourteen years at the helm because “the direction of this football team is not where we want it to be”?
Cutcliffe could employ the same maneuver as Dan Mullen at Florida – toss a few assistant coaches onto the bonfire and hope for the best.
On the other side of the success coin, Louisville annihilated Syracuse at home last week, 41-3, and will win their 2021 golden bowl ticket by dropping another ‘L’ on the Duke tonight. The 5-5 Cards are relieved to see the Blue Devils here with Kentucky on deck, as they’ve torched the Devils in each of their only other two meetings in this series, winning both games by an average score of 32-9.
We certainly can’t go into battle against that armed only with Duke’s near-lifeless 0-19 SU and 7-12 ATS mark as a 20-point or larger home dog.
Yes, we’re dog lovers, but we draw the line when it comes to fleas.
