READY, SET, GO UNDER

By Marc Lawrence — For many reasons that are easy to understand, most major sports books have yet to post NFL Season Win Totals. Now that the NFL draft is underway one team I’ll be ready to pounce on is going UNDER 10.5 wins on the San Francisco 49ers. Not only are they a defending Super Bowl loser but they soared from four wins to 13 last season. They remind me of the Jacksonville Jaguars who went from three wins in 2016 to 12 in 2017 before settling win with five wins in 2018. Be ready to pounce when the openers are ready en force.

It’s No Wonder

During the NFL Combine, every prospect participates in a Wonderlic test. The results of those tests are supposed to be kept private, but every year the numbers make their way to the public. Focusing on the QB’s, it was shocking to learn that Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa had the lowest reported Wonderlic score among the 2020 draft-eligilbe quarterbacks at 19 (out of 50). Before panicking, looking back, Michael Vick was a 7, Johnny Manziel a 3, and Colin Kaepernick a 2. Iowa’s Nate Stanley was the highest this year with 40. Oregon’s Justin Herbert, winner of the Campbell Trophy – known as the “academic Heisman” with a 4.01 GPA in biology – scored a 39. FYI: Ryan Fitzpatrick of the Miami Dolphins scores a 48 when he was drafted, the highest scored ever recorded. For a complete list of all of this year’s quarterbacks that were tested click here.
Houston, You’ve Got A Problem
From the 2020 Playbook Football Preview Guide Magazine: The Houston Texans won 9 games overall despite being outscored last season. The Texans won 7 of those game by a touchdown or less. More than half of O’Brien’s 52 career wins (27) have been by a touchdown of less.
