Today’s optional allowances for three year old fillies going a mile on the Oldsmar lawn is a tad tricky with three contenders emerging from the same race. But diving deeper in today’s 5th race, value can be had thanks to the Tampa Bay Today Video on the HRI homepage.
Queens Embrace (2-1), seeking her fifth straight win, and Sugar Fix (9-2), who put it all together for a lifetime best Thoro-Graph score last out, will have a lot to say about the outcome here. But Volador (6-1) is most interesting because she could easily slip through the parimutuel cracks.
The crowd may dismiss her because she has but a maiden claiming score on her card. But it came in her Tampa debut after getting a run vs. maiden allowances types at the Fair Grounds. After rating off the speed, she raced by after gathering momentum, galloping out strongly as she widened.
Last out, she raced on the lead on dirt, was pressed throughout and faded to third, but that’s not her game. Rating with a target on turf is better, as she demonstrated on MAR 27, RACE 3 here. Further, we believe the mini-cutback from 1-1/16th to one mile will further sharpen her kick.
We respect all three and making an exacta box, but we’re taking Volador to win, seeking 7-2 or more with no scratches, and am likely to press with key-exacta boxes with her two main rivals.
