The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

By Dave Brower, Meadowlands Handicapper — Early Double Analysis — February 13, 2021 — Race 1

1   ODDS ON LAUDERDALE – Finished his mile with a lot more “interest” last week. Bounced back nicely off the break, with the hopples taken in. Gets the ultimate drop to the bottom and lands the pole to boot. The one to beat.

2   DREAMFAIR CHARRO – Things didn’t set up for him last week, in that race won wire-to-wire by Sadiq. This could be different. The inner post keeps him close enough. Probably just needs somebody to soften up #1. Can happen.

3   SPORTY SPOOK A – Fresh claim here by a sharp outfit, but off a very dull effort. I don’t know what happened last month, but it wasn’t good. The missed time since is a big concern. Really not sure what to expect tonight. Trainer: Was a really nice horse back in Aussie. We have spent time getting him right. Expect improvement. Will be interesting.

4   THESPYWHOLOVEDME – Finds his way back up the Turnpike for a big track try. He’s done it here before, but seems like a long time ago. Probably should have held a little better at Freehold when dropped. Drops again. Maybe?

5   WHATSTROUBLNUROCKY – Yannick put this fella in the right spot last week and gelding just lacked that knockout punch. He’d better find one, if he wants to visit the winner’s circle here again. Won’t be big price. Still needs more.

6   ALEPPO HANOVER – Sports a 1-28 record over past two seasons, so that’s a strike. Just not at his best on mile track?

7   CHANGE STRIDE N – Just isn’t sharp right now and seems like a pass until we see a good one again. Not for me, even though Yannick chose here over #5.

8   BICORNE HANOVER – One of the several in here seeking to drop and pop. This one could wake up in spot like this. If so, we’re going to see some speed due to the bad post. I’ll be watching the board too. Needs to take some action.

9   WINDEMERE FRANK – Also overdue for some sort of wakeup call. This is monster class drop, but coupled with tough post, so that’s a wash. Recently on Lasix. Hopefully, it’s helping. He needs to bounce back with better.

10 PRIMO GIOVANNI – Where’s he going from post 10 tonight? Likely not very far. I just don’t see it vs. these.

Race 2

1   MISS MCKEE – One of two in here for the barn, but they’re both longshots. Hate to see that break in her comebacker, so I feel she’s going to need more work. I’m willing to watch one and wait.

2   DIXIE SLIPPERS – She’s been pretty good here so far! Not bad. Gets some needed post relief too! Seems to pack one good burst in her bag and timing, trip are critical. I definitely see her in the right spot to launch a big move.

3   CHAPTIAMA – This is a very talented horse! From limited starts over past two years, he’s managed to finish first or second in 12 out of 16. That’s strong! Comeback qualifier was very good. Trond can have one ready off the bench.

4   P L NOTSONICE – Here’s a real nice trotting mare for RM3! I do wish she’d qualified here, instead of Pocono, but I can’t control that. Keep in mind it was a three-horse qualifier, so I don’t know how much she got out of that.

5   BIG NUDGE – Took a real speed shot in the comebacker over at Yonkers and got pretty tired late. Not sure he was ready for that. Transitions over to the big track where he qualified well vs. Hipster K. That was good mile.

6   ROGER RABBIT – Dexter drove him perfect two back for the big win. Then, that last field was way too tough for him. This is a lot more like it, and he might have conditioning edge on the layoff foes. That goes a long way.

7   ITSONLYMONEYHONEY – Changed up the strategy last time and got used up in the pace battle. Okay. Gets stuck with another outside post, so I wonder what the plan will be? There’s plenty of potential speed in here. Tough call.

8   LAZZARO – That is some incredible-looking line down at Dover. I watched replay and he did go to running for no reason at one point. He was then three-wide for most of the final 3/8 and inhaled a stopping foe. Will he trot?

9   NO TIME TO PLAY – Was used a little bit harder last week and paid the price late. This post never helps, but he has more than enough speed to overcome it. Still needs to find that knockout punch late. That’s what is missing.
