The Conscience of Thoroughbred Racing

TAMPA BAY TODAY – MAY 8

With sunny skies and prospects for turf racing today in Oldsmar, a juicy turf event for maiden allowance types going nine furlongs. It’s one of those races, like old school Newsday, when there would be a most likely winner and a best value to offer. Today’s finale has one of those scenarios.

Idle Time (5-2) is very much T.H.E. one to beat off his career debut behind the forward looking North Dakota; finished up strongly behind that one and galloped out with energy in reserve. Team Christophe Clement/Antonio Gallardo; enough said.

But the three-year-old Doubly Blessed (8-1), with his no-slouch connections, Jonathan Thomas and Daniel Centeno, make the early line appear laughable, as does solid form.

Not as visually impressive as the fave but has big upside. He was handled tentatively on debut as he raced greenly, away from the barrier and in the early running, then came with a solid rally for third after his momentum took him 5-6 wide at headstretch. See what you think: MAR 28, RACE 6.

I will settle for 4-1 straight on the Thomas-trained 3-year-old–great second-out stats and plus getting five pounds–an exacta box with Idle Time, and I will add stoutly bred Beachwalker (5-1) to the exotics mix beneath.

  1. Thanks Dennis, a rare poor performance from Gallardo cost me dearly, but 6-1 certainly was a square price on the winner…

  2. Kind of felt had Idle Time not gotten boxed, we would have scored the ex and tri as well. Idle was better than he ran, and he still had more to give. I did feel good however with at least collecting a square win price as consolation. I recently gave the free helicopter money from Red Hat and the Fed and to a food bank in my area, and I thought for a few seconds when watching that maybe a space might open up just big enough for the Gods of Racing to throw me a little payback sunshine towards my AWD ledger. Maybe tomorrow. Lol. Anyhoot, thanks for the win today.

Sammie Sunshine was a scratch. Will follow that one.
