WHO SHOULD BE THE FAVORITE TO WIN PREAKNESS AFTER DERBY UPSET?

HRI Foreign Desk Staff — Tiz the Law’s bid for the Triple Crown came crashing to an end in Louisville. The heavy favorite heading into Churchill Downs was defeated by Authentic and finished second.

Tiz The Law had won the first leg of the Triple Crown series at Belmont in June, but his loss at the Kentucky Derby came in the race’s smallest field in over 20 years as just 15 horses competed in the Run for the Roses.

Tiz the Law was the favorite for the Derby and now may skip the Preakness Stakes. Horse racing fans are anticipating the race and debating which horse will win.

The Preakness Stakes is less than a month away. After Tiz the Law’s loss to Authentic at Churchill Downs, who will be the favorite to win the Preakness?

Authentic is the new favorite.

Authentic’s win at the Kentucky Derby has made him the favorite with sportsbooks to win the Preakness, October 3.

Bob Baffert, who had won his fair share of Derby events before Authentic’s became his sixth, will take his horse to Pimlico, aiming to win two-thirds of the Triple Crown.

Pre-race odds on Authentic to win the race are at 6/5. Oddsmakers are not only influenced by Authentic’s win in Louisville, but there is a strong possibility that Tiz the Law will not run the Preakness Stakes.

Trainer Barclay Tagg’s horse is listed as unlikely to run in the race following the Derby loss. The Triple Crown is impossible to win now and losing the Preakness would hurt Tiz the Law’s potential value at stud.

So, will Tiz the Law run?

Reports indicate Tiz the Law won’t but that hasn’t stopped leading sportsbooks from publishing antepost odds on the horse competing at Pimlico.

Tiz the Law is 5/2 to win the race according to leading sportsbook aggregator website Oddschecker following the Kentucky Derby.

Tiz the Law was 7/10 to win the Kentucky Derby but struggled down the stretch, failing to overtake Authentic in the final sprint.

The four-time Grade 1 winner has lost just twice in eight race starts. Tiz the Law’s only other loss came in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in November 2019 on a wet, muddy track.

Tagg claims Tiz the Law could be held back for the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November.

Can another horse pose a serious Preakness Stakes challenge?

According to Baffert, Authentic looked well after the Churchill Downs win. The time between the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes is longer than in previous years but Baffert is keeping Authentic at Churchill Downs for the preparations.

Thousand Words and Art Collector are two horses that could seriously challenge Authentic for the title at Pimlico. Art Collector is third in odds heading following the Derby at 5/2, while Baffert’s Thousand Words is 10/1.

Both horses could give Authentic a run for his money in what would be an exciting end to the 2020 Triple Crown.
